The Price of Mammon
Born in Glasgow in "Rotten Row" which is probably the best name in the world for a maternity hospital and certainly well worth mentioning.
Starting in Glasgow, then Paisley and finally now in sunny Kilwinning, Ayrshire may not be globe trotting but it has done me no harm to have travelled so far and wide!
Even though painting is my passion, I was thrown into painting literally and had little choice but paint or starve.
But since taking up the challenge, my life has changed for the better and even though I always had the desire to paint it is now a real passion going beyond all reason.
As a child my fondest memories are of lying on the floor painting and having fun doing it.
It is the idea of having fun while producing my work that stays with me today.
I try to keep the fun in whatever I am doing and will throw myself into new styles and techniques just to see what happens next.
That is how s
ome of my work is created, I start with a vague plan of how it should look and then let the painting take over.
The finished product sometimes takes me by surprise and
"I really like that bit"
is often the catalyst for the next painting.
My main subject matter is light, which is the most powerful tool in my palette. Unfortunately the main characters play only a supporting role to this.
By using light I can create a mood or feeling that will hold the attention of the viewer. If I can get a reaction from someone then I feel I have achieved something beyond putting paint onto canvas.
It is the idea of being able to move people in some way that is in itself a driving force to keep going and the next work is the challenge to do better and never accept second best, the last one was good the next will be great.
